Army Medic Receives Medal of Honor

National VFW - 8/7/2017

On Monday, the president presented the Medal of Honor to former Specialist Five James C. McCloughan of South Haven, Mich., for distinguished actions during 48 hours of close-combat against enemy forces near Don Que, Vietnam, from May 13-15, 1969. McCloughan, then 23 years old, voluntarily risked his life on nine separate occasions to rescue wounded and disoriented comrades. He was wounded by shrapnel and small arms fire on three separate occasions, yet refused medical evacuation in order to continue to rescue, treat and defend wounded Americans.
